Planning a raodtrip to Transkei this December ... is this a bad time to go tourist-wise? And what's the best way to do it from cape town??
Best best places to stop along the way, or could you just gun it all the way, and if so, how many hours is the drive?

Rent a van and drive with mates from Cape town to Hole-in-the-wall will take 14 hours to get there. Last 2 hours on poor roads. December has great weather, but will be busy and most backpackers booked up because lots of locals use them. Camping is a viable option, just ask permission from the local chief/elder. The drive is long but very scenic. Take the coast road along the Garden route and stop off for a bungee jump at Gourtiz Bridge, then stop in Wilderness for some beach time, in Knysna for a day or two - very pretty and best bakery in RSA, then up to Port ELizabeth and East London, neither of which are worth seeing to be honest.

Another option, if have the budget, is to fly on a budget airline to East London then rent a car and drive up the coast. You will bein the Transkei in an hour and no more than 5 hours from Port St Johns.

The campsite at coffee bay is really nice - stay there if you're into camping or the Coffee Shack is like the best backpackers ever... but you might need to book in advance

Hi there,

We are travelling from Langebaan CT to Umkomaas KZN - We plan to do it with one stop either in Port Alfred or do you think it is wiser to stop in East London, then the next day go through the Transkei? as then we will only have about 425 km to go to our destination?
Which is better? What advise does anyone have for us? Is the N2 safe through the Transkei?
Would appreciate any help....
